Vehicle Overturns Following Wheel Detaching from Car

By / 0 Comments /

The Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A. take note of an incident in which, following a highly unusual occurrence, a motorist was injured in yet another car wreck occurring along Interstate 75.  The accident occurred on February 1, 2014, as Guyton Register, 61, of Webster, was traveling southbound in an inside lane on I-75, at the Alachua/ Marion County line.

According to Trooper Joseph Simms and FHP, the front right wheel of Register’s 1999 Saturn LS2, somehow became detached, sending the vehicle into the center lane and causing it to overturn. Thereafter, the Saturn’s detached wheel struck a semi tractor-trailer, being operated by Chester Witherspoon, 41, of Lauderhill. Although no injuries were reported by the truck driver, the driver of the Saturn was not so lucky.

As a result of the rollover collision, Register was trapped in his vehicle until Marion County Fire and Rescue were able to cut the door off the Saturn and remove him. Register was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center for his injuries. In a statement provided by the hospital’s spokeswoman, Register was said to be listed in fair condition.

Although accidents involving vehicle-related factors are far less common than accidents involving human errors or mishaps, they actually occur more often than most might imagine. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 7% of all accidents are caused by vehicle-related failures.

Further, when crash data is delineated by specific type of vehicle component failure or deficiency, approximately 40% of vehicle-related crashes can be attributed to a vehicle’s tires or wheels. Vehicle-related accidents are also commonly associated with other factors, such as a vehicle’s braking components (25%), or a vehicle’s steering, suspension, transmission, or engine (10%).

In some cases, the cause of a vehicle-related accident can be traced to the manufacturer or distributor of a vehicle, or a component within the vehicle. In other cases, damage claims for vehicle-related accidents may be directed at other individuals or entities, such as a repair facility or the seller of a used car.

If you or a loved one were involved in an accident, and you suspect that a vehicle component may have caused or contributed to the accident, it is important that you discuss the incident with an attorney, who can assess the accident and explain your legal rights and options during a free consultation.
