Paynes Prairie Smoke: Ten Die in Auto Collisions

By / 0 Comments /

Ten people were killed in a series of deadly car crashes early Sunday morning January 29, 2012 on Interstate 75 near Gainesville.   Smoke from a Paynes Prairie brush fire reduced visibility to nearly zero and contributed to the auto accidents involving about 20 vehicles.

The smoke was so thick according to witnesses they could not see the car in front of them.  Among the mangled cars and trucks littering the highway in both directions, witnesses could  hear collisions and the screams of the trapped and dying.  Shands at the University of Florida was flooded with 18 injured,  including six in the trauma center and twelve in the emergency room, as a result of the pile-up.

The highway was closed in both directions for hours.  Conditions are not expected to be much better today.

Please be careful should you be traveling near Paynes Prairie.  Although you could walk away unscathed from such a collision, some will feel the injury after the adrenaline wears off, others may require surgery, or even die in such collisions. If you, or a loved one is injured or worse, you will need an attorney that understands how to communicate the extent and cause of your injury to a jury of your peers.

If you, a family member, or a loved one has been involved in a collision please call the Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A., for a free and confidential consultation.
