I-75-Paynes Prairie collisions avoidable?

By / 0 Comments /

Could the horrible collisions on I-75 as vehicles crossed the smoke from fires on Paynes Prairie have been avoided?  Questions continue about whether the deadly crashes were avoidable.   Was the interstate re-opened to cars and trucks too early?  Florida Highway Patrol officials said Monday the troopers who re-opened the highway at 3:26 a.m. were following procedure.  However, although the haze had lifted according to Lt. Patrick Riordan, less than 30 minutes later the smoke returned and the collisions, deaths and injuries continued to pile-up.

Ten people were killed and at least 21 injured in the string of crashes involving  20 vehicles, including tractor-trailers, cars, SUV’s and an RV.  Riordan said the stretch of interstate crossing Paynes Prairie was closed at 12:15 a.m. and monitored for smoke for nearly three hours, but eventually the smoke appeared to clear.  Despite the fact that more than one accident had already occurred earlier in the smoke, Riordan stated that, “The interstate was reopened at approximately 3:26 a.m. and at approximately 4:05 a.m. the first traffic crash occurred.”
