Gainesville Residents Concerned Over Increase in Car Accidents on SW 62nd Blvd

By / 0 Comments /

As noted by several local news stations, the high volume of traffic along SW 62nd Blvd in Gainesville presents serious concerns to vulnerable road users who are forced to share the roadway with motorists, such as pedestrians and bicyclists. Despite the city’s installation of crosswalk signs warning drivers of the potential for collision, bicycle and pedestrian accidents rates continued to steadily increase, many of which resulted in serious injury or fatality.

Recognizing the nearly 60% increase in traffic collisions along this roadway from 2012 to 2013, additional safety measures were taken by city in 2013 by affixing flashing lights to pedestrian crossing signs. Many residents agree that the city’s safety efforts were a necessary improvement. However, as accidents continue to occur, concerns remain over this dangerous roadway, which has a high volume of both motorist and pedestrian traffic.

Perhaps most troubling is that many accidents along SW 62nd occur within crosswalks, as pedestrians lawfully attempt to cross the roadway. The failure of motorists to observe the presence of pedestrians in crosswalks can be attributed to a variety of reasons. One of the most common causes of pedestrian crosswalk accidents is distracted driving. While texting and driving is a clear distraction, engaging in any activity that causes a driver to take their eyes of the road, inhibits the ability to fully observe one’s surroundings, therefore increasing the likelihood of a collision.

Speeding is another common cause of pedestrian crosswalk accidents occurring along SW 62nd Blvd. Because of the large variations in posted speed limits along this roadway, motorists often fail to observe reductions in speed limits in portions with increased amounts of foot traffic.  Traffic laws require that motorists yield to pedestrians lawfully within a crosswalk. A motorist’s ability to yield to pedestrians, as they approach a crosswalk, is greatly reduced when a motorist fails to maintain continued observance of posted speed limits.

The Gainesville Pedestrian and Bicycle Accident Attorneys of the Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A. support the city’s efforts to improve safety for vulnerable road users that travel along SW 62nd Blvd. Yet, at the same time, the alarming accident rate on this roadway, continues to plague the residents of our community. Nevertheless, we remain optimistic that resolution of this issue can ultimately be achieved through the promotion of safety awareness. Substantial improvement, however, necessitates the concerted efforts of both the city, as well as all persons that occupy this busy stretch of roadway.
